The Tiny Flies That Came With the Free Salad
You set up a sealed, soilless, app-controlled garden specifically to avoid the messy parts of gardening, and now there are tiny black flies doing laps around your kitchen. Welcome to fungus gnats, the most common pest of indoor growing and proof that nature finds a way, even onto your countertop.
First, the reassuring part: fungus gnats are a nuisance far more than a threat. Adults do not bite, do not eat your plants, and live only about a week. The larvae feed mainly on fungi, algae, and decaying organic matter in wet media; in large numbers they can nibble fine roots, which mostly matters for seedlings. The real problem is that they multiply fast and they are deeply annoying. The fix is not a single kill move — it is breaking their life cycle.
Where They Actually Come From
Fungus gnats need two things: a way in, and constantly wet organic material to breed in. In a pod garden, the entry routes are predictable:
- Hitchhiking on houseplants. The most common source by far. A new or repotted houseplant with infested soil seeds the whole home, and your pod garden's permanently moist sponges are prime real estate for the next generation.
- Bagged potting soil stored or used nearby — open bags are frequently already inhabited.
- Open windows and doors in warm months. They are small and unambitious flyers, but they get around.
- Less often, the pods themselves, if grow media sat somewhere damp during storage.
Inside the garden, their nursery is any chronically wet organic surface: exposed sponge tops, algae films, dead leaves rotting on the deck, the damp crud in deck crevices. Notice that list is basically the same as the algae list — gnats and algae are roommates, and the larvae literally eat algae. If you have green sponge tops, you are running a gnat buffet.
Breaking the Cycle
Adults live days; eggs-to-adult takes a few weeks. Kill adults alone and the next wave is already incubating. Remove breeding habitat alone and the current adults keep laying for days. Do both, and the population collapses within a generation or two. The routine:
1. Trap the adults. Yellow sticky traps are the unglamorous workhorse — gnats are drawn to yellow, and a small trap stuck near (not touching) the canopy both kills adults and gives you a population census. Falling trap counts week over week mean you are winning.
2. Dry out and clean the breeding sites. 3. Do a full reservoir change and scrub. Larvae and the biofilm they feed on live in the wet zones. A proper clean — empty, scrub, rinse, refill with fresh water and properly dosed hydroponic nutrients — resets the habitat. Overfed reservoirs grow more algae, which feeds more larvae, so dose to the label, not to your anxiety.
4. Treat the source plant. If a nearby houseplant is the reservoir of infestation, treating only the pod garden is mowing one half of the lawn. Let the houseplant's topsoil dry well between waterings (larvae need constant moisture), add a sticky trap there too, or top-dress with a layer of sand or fine gravel to block egg-laying.
5. Escalate gently if needed. For stubborn infestations, BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis — sold as mosquito bits or dunks) is a larvae-specific biological control widely used by indoor growers; steeped in water, it targets gnat and mosquito larvae specifically. Follow the product label, especially around edible crops. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticide sprays in a kitchen garden — overkill in every sense.
Keeping Them From Coming Back
Prevention is mostly hygiene you should be doing anyway: quarantine and inspect new houseplants for a couple of weeks before parking them near the garden, store potting soil sealed, remove dead leaves promptly, keep algae down, and do regular water changes. A single sticky trap left in place as a sentinel will tell you about a new incursion while it is still a skirmish rather than an occupation.
