How much electricity does a smart garden use?
Less than people fear, more than zero: the LED light is the whole story. A small ~8–13W countertop unit running 16 hours a day uses roughly 4–6 kWh a month — about $0.65–$1.06 at a typical $0.17/kWh US residential rate. Big floor units with ~50–60W light arrays run roughly 24–29 kWh a month, or about $4.08–$4.90. Pumps add a rounding error.
Are seed pods worth it, or a subscription in disguise?
It depends on the ecosystem. Proprietary pods at $2–3 each, replaced roughly every two-month grow cycle, behave like a small subscription: a fully planted 9-pod garden runs about $11/month in pods alone. Open systems like the iDOO take any seeds in generic baskets for pennies — that openness is worth real money over a year. Membership-centric systems (Gardyn) move the pod economics into a plan, which is why we flag them separately.
What is the cheapest way to run a smart garden?
Three levers, in order: (1) buy an open-pod system or refill pods with generic seeds and sponges; (2) only plant the pods you'll actually eat — pod cost scales with pods in use, electricity doesn't; (3) prefer a lower-wattage unit if you're growing herbs and greens, which don't need the big light.
